The term ‘Annual Information Statement (AIS)’ might conjure images of endless scrolling under the glare of blue light, navigating countless forms and tasks required for regulatory compliance. If you’ve ever operated or supported a business or charity, this scenario may feel all too familiar. You might even view the AIS as just another item on a long to-do list.

But make no mistake: the AIS is essential to Australia’s thriving philanthropic ecosystem.

Every year, Australian charities must submit their AIS to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Far from being mere bureaucracy, the AIS serves as a vital tool for accountability and transparency. The AIS allows regulators, donors, and the public to understand who charities are, the work they do, and the impact they aim to achieve.

Imagine a world without this framework. Without the AIS, the operations and activities of charities could remain hidden from view, leaving the sector vulnerable to secrecy and diminished trust. Charities could face challenges complying with laws, and the public would lose confidence in their integrity. Over time, this lack of transparency could harm Australia’s economy and even weaken the values of accountability and democracy that underpin our society.

By embracing the importance of the AIS, we uphold not just the individual missions of our charities but the broader commitment to fostering a fairer and more transparent community for everyone.
